So, I haven’t kept up with posting about all of my 3d printing adventures. Mostly because I have been printing toys and trinkets of other peoples models. This post is no exception, but it was a fun project which allowed me to utilize a 3d scanner.

I have been privileged to play with a great group of folks in a heavy metal cover band in Japan called DropX. Each member has our own unique and quirky personalities. Since we play heavy metal, we also dress the part in our own way. Our singer used to sing in a Slipknot cover band and enjoyed wearing the getup. He also had made a variety of his own masks. I thought it would be fun to make a mask for myself using my 3d printer.

Since the band is a heavy metal band based on Japan, I thought an Oni style mask would be appropriate. I selected a cool model I found on Thingverse to print.

In order to ensure a good fit, I used my 3d scanner to create a scale 3d scan of my face. After importing my digital head and the mask model into the slicer software, I was able to scale the mask to fit the shape of my face. So-as to minimize post-processing work on the mask, I opted to print it using silk silver PLA. I think it turned out pretty great. I finished it off with an elastic strap from Daiso, and a 3d printing strap clip.
